Akhand Ramayana Paath Reading Guide

Akhand Ramayana Paath is the process of reading the full Ramayana non-stop in a continuous 24-hour period.

The session starts with an initial invocation, followed by aarti, and then continues the recitation for the following 24 hours. The primary readers read in pairs. Typically, the reading is concluded with aarti, bhajans, katha and mahaprasad.

After each doha, "Mangal Bhavan" is read (please download), except towards the end, where "Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram" is read after each line.

A constant, effortless reading schedule is pertinent for completing the reading. Download the reading schedule to help you plan for the event.

Preparations

It is important to arrange a good altar with your Ishta Devata, such as Ganesha Ji, Lord Ramchandra, Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Mata Durga, Hanuman Ji Mahraj and any other favorite deities of the host.

The following may also be arranged:
  • Tulsi Plant (if not, some Tulsi leaves are good)
  • Gangajal
  • Sriphal (Narial) and Kalawa (Red thread)
  • Lamp/diya, that will remain lit for 24 hours and enough Ghee (not oil)/Incense (Agarbatti)
  • Flowers, Fruits, and sweets (naiveidya)
  • Lawang/Mishri/Elaichi/Tambul/Supari/Akshat (uncooked washed rice)/Kumkum or Sindur
  • Sound system (for large audience/halls)
  • Comfortable sitting arrangement for 24-hour reciters
  • Tea/Coffee/Milk/Juice/cup/plates/paper towels etc
  • Dholak/Kartal/harmonium whatever is easily available (not to worry too much)
  • Since readers can sit for long hours, a comfortable sitting arrangement made of thick cushions, multiple layers of thick chadder, etc. will be useful.
